Market Research Front Cover Conventions - Magazine 3

Masthead – The Masthead on this magazine is easily seen on the front cover of the magazine, with big bold red lettering, that stands out well with the image.

Image – This medium long shot image dominated the front cover of the magazine, the woman looks nicely dressed and very happy which conveys that this college is a happy place to be. The background of the image shows clothing and make-up products, the intention of this is made clear when reading the Anchorage.

Anchorage – The Anchorage of “NYC’s Freshman Fashion CEO Colette Young” gives the image meaning and also explains to us the background image choice of clothing and make-up.

Screamer – The screamer of “I’M GAY AND IN A FETERNITY” is written in bold capital lettering and is located on the left hand side of the magazine and instantly draws the reader’s attention.

Colour scheme/ Graphical – The graphical choices of using red shows the vital pieces of writing which the magazine wants the audience to be drawn too. The Masthead is written in red, and also the cover like of ‘Greek’.

The left third – Where the best eye-catching cover line’s and information are located, this is so that the information is easy to see on the shelves. “I’M GAY AND IN A FERTERNITY”, “Spice Up Your Resume (And Cover Letter Too!)”

Language – The Masthead on this magazine cover is simple and easy to remember “college”, this Masthead let’s the reader know straight away what the magazine is about. The bright bold, lettering stands out well on a white background which makes it more visible as to catch people’s eyes, the capital type also stands out well as it is more interesting to look at then lower case lettering and makes the Masthead more dominant. The screamer of “I’M GAY AND IN A FERTERNITY” grabs the reader’s attentions and draws them to this magazine as they will want to read the story. Having this screamer in bold capital lettering also makes it stand out well on the page and more to the reader’s eyes.

Institution – The institution for this magazine is the college itself. No special brand name is associated with college magazines as only the college students would buy it, therefore companies would make a loss rather than any profit.

Ideology ­This photo is effective for showing this ideology as the reader can connect with the model which draws them to the magazine, we get the feeling that this college is a friendly, happy, well presented place to come and learn. The girl on the front cover is smiling and is dressed well as the anchorage to go along with her image is about fashion.

 

Audience – This college magazine is aimed at students who already attend the college, although this magazine does seem to be aimed more towards women as the image on the magazine and the headline associated with it is talking about “Fashion CEO Colette Young”, and the stories seem to be more that what a woman would want to read.

Representation – The representation of this magazine shows that this college is the stereotypical friendly place to come and learn. The girl on the front is smiling and looks friendly which connotes this.
